Google Search Will Penalize Sites That Use Back Button Hijacking Tactics

Among the increasingly vile tactics when going to websites is a tactic called “back button hijacking”. When the back button is pressed to return to the previous page, another page with ads or other news links is displayed. You can press it several times and it still won’t return to the previous page as it should.

Google is aware of this tactic and starting June 15, 2026, it will impose a penalty on the Search engine on sites that still use this back button hijacking. This policy was announced on April 13 with existing sites given two months to remove the button hijacking script if any,

Failure to take steps to remove this feature will cause the site’s ranking to be lowered or not to be listed in Google searches in the future.
