At the end of March, Elon Musk announced that he was planning to open his own semiconductor chip manufacturing plant, Project Terafab, so that companies like SpaceX and Tesla AI can use their own new processing chips at a faster rate.
Recently, Bloomberg reported that those responsible have begun discussions with various parties, including Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, Lam Research and Samsung Electronics for support on what is the most efficient way to develop and ensure that the plant is always operating at an optimal level.
Intel is also reported to be offering their services to enable the Terafab plant to start producing processing chips as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, they have also begun approaching companies that make the equipment needed to produce the processing chips. One of the reasons why the Terafab plant needs to be opened, according to Elon Musk, is to speed up the introduction cycle of new chips.
He believes that if they had their own semiconductor chip manufacturing capacity, the process could be accelerated from 12 months to 9 months from start to finish, and this would allow their AI technology to be released to the market faster.
Elon Musk also expects that the Terafab factory will begin operating and producing their first processing chips in 2029, and will be operating at optimal levels shortly thereafter.
