Instagram Updates Algorithm to Prioritize Original Content

Instagram is now getting stricter about ensuring that original content is prioritized and that original creators get the rewards and exposure they deserve.

The app announced that it will no longer recommend images and carousel updates from content aggregator accounts or profiles that only focus on reuploading. With this latest algorithm update, a major change is expected to have a significant impact on the reach of content in the app.

According to Instagram, the protection that previously only applied to reels is now also extended to image and carousel content. Accounts that simply reupload other people's content are no longer eligible to appear in recommendations. Instead, the main focus is given to the original creators because they deserve proper credit and distribution. In fact, 75% of recommendations in the United States now come from original content.

According to Instagram, the definition of original content includes content in the form of photos or videos taken by yourself, content that is designed and edited in a meaningful way such as adding unique text, creative graphics or using the Remix function. On the other hand, content is considered non-original if it is only reuploaded with minor additions such as a watermark or credit in the caption.

However, accounts with official licenses or explicit permission from the original creator will not be affected, and this policy is separate from the intellectual property policy. Affected accounts can still be reinstated if within 30 days of the latest content being deemed original, the status can be checked via Account Status.

Instagram also highlighted some practical steps to help creators maintain their eligibility. Among the tips outlined are using additional tools such as Collabs, Remixes or paid sharing labels, as well as encouraging third-party content sharing through Stories or Reposts to ensure original credit is given. Creators are also encouraged to regularly check Account Status to see where their accounts stand.
