Menteri Besar Johor, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi revealed that he received an official notification from Apple that the iPhone linked to his personal account was the target of a sophisticated spyware attack. Apple stated that the attack may have targeted him because of who he is or what he does.
Onn Hafiz stressed that this issue involves data security, communication secrecy, and individual privacy rights. In this regard, he will file a police report and make an official complaint to MCMC for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action.
In the email received by Onn Hafiz, Apple said that he was among the recipients of warnings sent to individuals in 96 countries who were also victims of a spyware attack. What software was used was not disclosed by Apple but it is in the same class as Pegasus by NSO Group. Since the cyber attack warning system was introduced by Apple five years ago, it has been received by Apple device users in 150 countries.
