Threads introduces a new logo and wordmark after almost 3 years of being launched as an Instagram side project. Now it is entering a new era as a stand-alone brand. This means Threads comes with a more distinct identity from Instagram and emphasizes the concept of providing the best in community conversations.
Head of Design, Chris Clare Design explained each new concept used in both changes. The new wordmark uses a style of writing that is italicized to symbolize the spirit of moving forward in line with the concept of fast-paced conversations on Threads. This also distinguishes its identity from Instagram, which is more focused on sharing images and videos. The letter design also has angled ends and square cuts inspired by the highlighter element that has been used for the past year.
According to him, the old logo was heavily influenced by Instagram Sans and looked static. The new logo is now thicker to provide better image support and can stand alone next to other application icons. This logo is also drawn with a continuous line that emphasizes the handwritten element, thus symbolizing the conversation on Threads that never stops.
