Previously, Google accounts could be logged in using a password. Then Passkey was introduced with only a fingerprint or Face ID biometric scan supported. This morning Google announced that accounts can now be logged in using selfies.
Users first need to record a selfie following the instructions given on the screen. This will be the basic identity verification video. When the login system is used, users only need to follow the instructions given such as looking left, right, up or down. It will then be compared to the basic video for verification.
Google says there are security features to prevent this system from being fooled using artificial intelligence-generated videos. For example, the instructions given during verification are different to ensure that it is a genuine selfie.
According to Google, selfies are recorded and stored with users being able to delete them at any time d It is only used to help log in. The selfie will be encrypted when not in use.
