With the global RAM crisis causing prices to skyrocket, device prices are also soaring, storage and memory sizes are becoming increasingly limited, and only a few global technology companies can say it's good news for them.
One of them is Samsung Device Solutions (DS), with Kim Yong-kwan, president and head of corporate management, strategy and operations of DS for Samsung Electronics, expecting the semiconductor business's operating profit in 2026 to be greater than the accumulated profit over the past 40 years.
Last quarter, Samsung DS recorded an operating profit of $58.5 billion (~RM 239 billion), which exceeded analysts' expectations of $55.1 billion. This also puts Samsung as the company with the largest quarterly profit ever recorded in history. It surpassed NVIDIA's record quarterly profit of $53.54 billion
Samsung DS contributed 94% of Samsung Electronics' operating profit in the first quarter of 2026. The huge profit is expected to continue until 2028 when RAM supply is expected to stabilize again.
This double profit is the reason why the labor union threatened to hold an 18-day strike if their bonus demands were not met. After negotiations, Samsung semiconductor employees received a bonus of RM 1.3 million each while other business employees should receive a bonus of around RM 16,000 each.
As a result, thousands of Samsung Device eXperience (DX) employees are planning to organize a rally at Samsung's headquarters on July 16 to voice their dissatisfaction with the unequal bonus distribution.
