Another lawsuit has been filed against Anthropic and Suno for allegedly infringing on the copyright of music chips used to train artificial intelligence models. The $1 billion lawsuit was filed by music publishing company Round Hill, which claims that copyrights to between 500 and 10,000 of its songs were used without permission.
Among the songs Round Hill owns are “Iris” (Goo Goo Dolls), “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (Bonnie Tyler) and “Lola” (The Kinks). Suno is accused of using the songs to train a generative AI model that can generate music. Anthropic, meanwhile, used the lyrics to train Claude.
The two companies have previously been sued by Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Concord and BMG. Suno settled the case out of court and now limits the number of downloads of user-generated songs.
The increasing number of similar cases involving copyright holders and AI companies is forcing Microsoft to develop new MAI models that are only trained using legally licensed data.
