Malaysia Reportedly Considering Using Huawei Chips for Sovereign AI Ecosystem

Malaysia is now reportedly considering using Huawei chips to power its own sovereign artificial intelligence efforts, thus demonstrating the use of Chinese-made technology, and reducing dependence on US technology.

For now, it is said to be still in the consideration and evaluation phase. Since Huawei was imposed sanctions, they have begun to make high investments in developing completely independent technology, including for device processing chips, data centers, and also for artificial intelligence purposes. This move also rivals a number of companies in the United States, including NVIDIA.

Among the chips said to be being evaluated is the Ascend 910C. The United States itself does not like developments from China, and is ready to warn against anyone using Chinese technology, including Huawei's chips.

Various countries are now looking to develop their own sovereign technology, thus reducing dependence on Western technology. One of the reasons is due to the US Cloud Act which allows American technology companies to provide data to the government there, even if the data is stored in data centers outside the United States. PM Anwar Ibrahim himself has stated that this legislation is absurd.

If Malaysia were to use Huawei chips, it would make Malaysia one of the first countries to do so, and perhaps the whole world would be watching to see how the United States would react to the move. For now, nothing is certain, and everything is reportedly still in the evaluation phase.
