The global semiconductor industry is currently experiencing a windfall, with companies like SK Hynix and Samsung previously awarding their employees highly lucrative bonuses. SK Hynix was the first to offer substantial bonuses—amounting to as much as 30 months' salary—followed by Samsung Semiconductor, where employees threatened to strike after being dissatisfied with bonuses that paled in comparison to those offered by SK Hynix.
Recently, it was the turn of memory and storage component manufacturer Micron; reports indicate that employees at the company were offered a minimum bonus of 1 million TWD (approximately $31,000) at the close of their recent fiscal year.
Much like the situation at Samsung Semiconductor, Micron employees based in Taoyuan, Taiwan, initially rejected the bonus offer through their labor union. They argued that they wanted a share of operating profits, similar to the model offered by SK Hynix.
It was also reported that new engineers joining Micron before August 29, 2026, would receive an average bonus of at least 3.4 million TWD—comprising 2.9 million TWD in cash and the remainder in company stock. This is separate from the regular stock grants awarded to them annually. At the highest bonus tier, the cash value received by an employee would be equivalent to 68 months' salary, or nearly five years' worth of pay.
Micron’s Taiwan operations employ 15,000 workers, all of whom stand to receive the minimum 1 million TWD bonus should the labor union accept the offer. At present, the union is still deliberating whether to accept the deal or if further discussions are required. Meanwhile, in a statement issued by Micron, all its employees worldwide—including those at the packaging and testing plants in Muar and Penang—will receive substantial bonuses; however, no details regarding the bonuses to be offered have been provided so far. While there is speculation circulating on local social media, the details have not yet been confirmed by Micron.
