OpenAI Acquires Data Center Capacity in Malaysia Through AI Infrastructure Developer Firmus

OpenAI has recently reportedly signed a deal with Firmus, an Australian AI infrastructure developer, to acquire data center capacity in Malaysia. It is reported that OpenAI will be the anchor tenant for two data centers in Malaysia, further solidifying Malaysia’s position as the leading AI data center operator in the region.

Firmus, which is backed by Nvidia, is now valued at more than US$10.5 billion in its latest fundraising round. The deal makes OpenAI the lead customer for its AI data center capacity services and increases Firmus’ contracted capacity across all its customers to over 900 megawatts (MW).

Firmus currently has two data centers in Australia and Singapore, with five more under construction around Southeast Asia, of which if the signed contracts are confirmed, two will be in Malaysia.

With the opening of these five new AI data centers, Firmus will also reportedly house NVIDIA’s latest Vera Rubin AI processing accelerator in these data centers, making them high-value AI data center locations, as this processing power will be utilized by major global AI companies, such as OpenAI.

At this time, Firmus has not confirmed other details of the contract, such as the contract duration and the value of the contract. It is also not yet known when their data centers, specifically in Malaysia, will begin operations.
