BYD Malaysia has reached a new milestone in its local market strategy by selecting Inokom Corporation as its CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly partner. Production will take place at Inokom’s plant in Kulim, Kedah.
This decision follows an assessment of existing production capabilities and the potential of the Malaysian market. The move not only puts to rest speculation regarding the cancellation of previously planned factory projects in Tanjong Malim but also resolves long-standing questions about who would become BYD’s CKD partner in Malaysia.
The selection of Inokom is no coincidence; the company is well-regarded for its extensive experience in vehicle assembly operations, a skilled workforce, and well-organized production facilities. This collaboration is further supported by Sime Motors—the official distributor for BYD in Malaysia—providing a strategic advantage to both parties.
With stable assembly operations, an experienced workforce, and established facilities, Inokom provides a solid foundation for BYD Malaysia to expand its local assembly plans and build automotive capabilities within the country. Furthermore, this partnership creates opportunities for local vendors to participate in the supply chain, thereby strengthening Malaysia’s automotive ecosystem.
The formal agreement was signed in Shenzhen between BYD and Sime Motors, with Liu Xueliang representing BYD and Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson representing Sime. Currently, BYD offers seven models in Malaysia, including three premium models under the Denza brand: the D9, Z9GT, and B8. However, the specific models to be assembled in Kulim have yet to be announced.
