Malaysia is reportedly preparing to address a rather unique type of disaster: objects falling from space.
Datuk Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, addressed a question from Tan Kar Hing (PH, Pagoh) regarding the government's preparedness for space-related incidents. He stated that these efforts include the implementation of the Space Accident Exercise (ExLAKA), designed to test the nation's response capabilities for such incidents.
The first phase of ExLAKA testing was conducted on November 26 and 27, 2025, while the second phase—involving more complex scenarios—took place on October 1. A full-scale exercise is scheduled for early next year.
The results from these tests will be used to update and finalize the Space Disaster Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) 4.0. This document—currently at the Version 3.0 "Investigation Document" stage—details the investigation process for suspected space objects and is being updated based on the practical experience of the Space Regulatory Division.
Additionally, he confirmed that space-related accidents were officially brought under the purview of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) on January 28, 2026. This means that in the event of an accident or incident involving objects falling from space, NADMA will cover social financial assistance, while MOSTI—through the Space Regulatory Body—will bear the necessary operational costs.
