There is widespread speculation that Sony might introduce a handheld gaming console alongside its next-generation home console, the Sony PlayStation 6. It is unclear whether the "PlayStation Portable" name will be revived, but new rumors have emerged regarding the components that will power the device.
In a recent report, Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry revealed that Sony’s upcoming handheld console could be the only one to feature an AMD RDNA 5 graphics processing unit—AMD’s next-generation graphics architecture.
While this might initially appear to be an exclusive agreement between AMD and Sony, Richard Leadbetter explains that such an arrangement is driven by AMD’s need for assurance from its clients that they will place large-volume orders for these chips.
Consequently, if other brands that utilize AMD processors—such as Microsoft or ASUS—wish to incorporate RDNA 5 graphics into their own consoles, they would need to commit to purchasing a significant quantity of these chips. It is possible that Microsoft’s "Project Helix" console might utilize this architecture, though it remains unknown whether it would appear in any handheld device from them.
This could also imply that the anticipated AMD Ryzen Z3 Extreme processor might feature "AMD RDNA 4.5" graphics—much in the same way that the current AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme utilizes RDNA 3.5 graphics.
