South Korea Aims to Develop Its Own AI Model by 2027

South Korea is looking to develop its own AI model and plans to allocate a tender worth 4.7 trillion won (approximately RM14.345 billion) for this purpose.

Relevant ministries are currently awaiting budget approval—expected in December 2026—before selecting the winning bidder to develop the AI model, with work slated to begin as early as February 2027.

The AI model will be developed through a public-private partnership, covering aspects such as development and data management. This move will enable South Korea to possess its own proprietary model, eliminating the need to rely on external entities—particularly the United States or China—for such development.

Beyond South Korea, several other nations are also considering developing their own models, especially given that the US government controls the supply of AI models to external parties.
