Trump Now Seeks to Ban the Use of the Term "AI"

In September, President Donald Trump stated that he would begin using the term "Super Intelligence"—or "SI" for short—instead of "AI" to refer to artificial intelligence. Later that month, he issued an executive order mandating the use of the term "SI" in all official government documents. Yesterday, he announced that he intends to ban the use of the terms "artificial intelligence" and "AI" entirely within the United States.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed outrage that *The Wall Street Journal* continues to use the term "AI" in its publications. Claiming that "AI" is a false and inaccurate term, he once again sought to promote the use of "SI" and "Super Intelligence." Consequently, he declared that he would soon ban these two terms in the United States.

The term "SI" is now mandatory for use in all official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports, policy documents, and other non-statutory documentation within the executive branch. The issue, however, is that the term "AI" has been in use for over 70 years by scientists, researchers, and the academic community. It cannot simply be changed at the whim of a president who is not an expert in the field.

The term "AI" was coined in 1955 by John McCarthy, a faculty member at Stanford University, who defined it as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines."
