The government is currently examining the possibility of introducing stricter regulations for online gaming platforms, such as Roblox. This move follows growing concerns regarding child safety—specifically concerning user-to-user communication and the content available on these platforms.
According to the Minister of Communications, Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF), is evaluating appropriate regulatory measures to enhance user protection on online gaming platforms. This assessment also takes into account practices adopted in other countries, particularly regarding the management of user safety and in-game communication issues.
Concurrently, the CMCF is gathering feedback from various stakeholders as part of an effort to develop a specific sub-code for the video game industry. Involved parties include game developers, app store operators, security experts, and researchers.
While Roblox is among the platforms under scrutiny, the government currently has no plans to ban it. Nevertheless, these developments reflect mounting concerns regarding the safety of children on modern gaming platforms, which increasingly resemble social media in terms of their communication features.
According to Fahmi, thousands of pieces of inappropriate content have been removed since 2022, while thousands of complaints related to cyberbullying have also been recorded during the same period. These figures indicate that online safety issues are no longer confined to social media platforms; they now increasingly extend to gaming ecosystems that are widely used by the younger generation.
