How To Know Your WiFi Is Used By Others

Suddenly the internet connection became slower than usual. Either the network is bad or your WiFi is being used by someone else.

Hopefully these tips can help you to get a better line without missing out:

1. Check the wireless router lights

The wireless router should have an indicator light that indicates internet connectivity, wired network connection, and even wireless activity. One way to find out if anyone is using your network is by turning off all wireless devices and seeing if the wireless lights are still flashing.

The problem with this method is that you may have many other WiFi devices (such as TVs, smartphones, or game consoles) to unplug. The process also does not provide much additional information.

2. Check the list of router devices

The router administration console can help learn more about wireless network activity. To do so, enter the IP address of the router into the web browser window. Some routers have a default IP address that you can use to access the admin panel.

Otherwise, you can find this address in Windows by opening a command prompt (press Win + R then type cmd) then type ipconfig in the window followed by Enter. The number next to 'Default Gateway' or 'IPv4 address' is the number you are looking for. Next, type the IP address in the browser window. You will be prompted to log in to the router.

All routers are different, but once you’re signed in, find the section related to the connected device (Device Manager, Connected Devices, My Network, etc.). This method should provide a list of IP addresses, MAC addresses, and device names (if detected) that you can find.

All you have to do is compare the connected devices to your own devices, to find unwanted users.

3. What should I do if I find an unwanted device?

Ensure wireless security uses WPA2 encryption and be prepared to provide new passwords. This will prevent unwanted users from accessing your WiFi network. Make sure the password this time is stronger than before.
