Avoid Interest in Public Currency Exchange

Hari Raya will manifest even in the sadness of PKP 3.0 which was implemented in some places. Despite the feeling of hiba thinking of a sheet day that was not as festive as before, each of them is still optimistic to continue the routine of Eid preparations as usual.

Among the common routines is to prepare duit raya and to make the children happy.

No less institutions and shops are providing envelopes for their customers and not to forget more and more applications are available especially by banks to provide duit raya channel platform via QR code, or online money transfer known as e-duit raya.

In addition, many banks such as Maybank, Ambank, Affin and others provide small denomination currency exchange services through their ATM machines.

Denominations as low as RM10 up to RM50 are available with a maximum value depending on the respective bank.

In preparing duit raya, some of us will go to banks or send to friends who work in banks to exchange duit raya with small denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10 or maybe RM20 and RM50.

Apart from that, money exchange is also done by getting new money as if it has just been printed, suitable to be used as duit raya for small children.

In our passion to exchange duit raya, there is one important condition to keep in mind. The condition is that we need to ensure that our currency exchange is done at the same value without any increase.

For example, we exchange RM500 for a denomination of RM5 amounting to RM450. This is something that should be avoided due to the presence of the element of Riba.

Based on the authentic hadith narrated by Ubadah bin Samit RA that the Prophet SAW said:

‘Gold exchanged for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, tamar for tamar, salt for salt, (shall) be done equally in quality and quantity, and in cash (without delay). If (transactions) are of different types, then do the sale and purchase according to what you want, provided it is done in cash. '(Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim (no. 1587))

The above hadith mentions about gold and silver where the scholars compare it to the currency of today. Then currency transactions follow the same conditions.

The condition to prevent Riba from occurring is that the value is exchanged without any increase or decrease.

However, if the friend or party providing the small denomination wants to charge for the exchange, it must be at a reasonable value, according to a reasonable rate, and as far as possible justify the cost such as fuel costs or shipping costs according to place and so on.

It cannot be charged at will because it will lead to the element of Riba as mentioned in the hadith above.

An example of an unreasonable charge is a percentage charge for example a 10% charge for each exchange. Change RM100 charged RM10, change RM1000 charged RM100. This is one of the examples of the element of Riba that is forbidden in Shariah.

Finally, congratulations on Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Victory Day and our day to return to Fitrah on the straight path.
