Alas, more crude and negative content on Twitter

Twitter is considered to be getting better at moderating its platform, it was recently reported that Twitter has taken action against 964,459 accounts for abusive behavior. The figures are compiled based on the period between 1 July and 21 December 2020.
Compared to the first six months of 2020, the number increased by 142%. In the meantime, Twitter is also throwing out more hateful content.

In that regard, the company says it has taken action against 1,126,990 accounts, a 77% increase from 635,415 accounts reprimanded in the first half of 2020.

The increase also prompted Twitter to make policy changes implemented throughout 2020. In particular, it cited the fact that Twitter began taking action against content that evoked fear and / or frightening stereotypes about protected categories as a result of increased disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company also called for an expansion of its hate behavior policy in early December that saw the company ban language that demeans people based on their race, ethnicity or national origin.

Elsewhere in the report, Twitter also attributed its recent success to better technology. In the second half of last year, the company claimed an automatic moderation tool helped it take action against 65% of crude tweets and other behavior before someone had to tag content for moderators.

To put that percentage in perspective, the tool is around 50% effective by the end of 2019.

This explains that Twitter hasn’t completely stopped harassment and hate speech on its platform, but with this report showing Twitter is at least making progress on its 2019 promise to improve the health of public conversation.
