Corning is showcasing a new layer of glass that serves as a protective camera lens on the phone, called Gorilla Glass with DX and DX +.
This layer of glass not only serves as a protector, but also captures more light. Corning claims Gorilla Glass with DX and DX + has better optical performance and better scratch resistance.
This composite variant of the DX is actually nothing new, as Corning used it as a glass coating for smart watches in 2018. However, they say that the glass coating for camera lenses has its own challenges.
The challenge is that the glass must be more scratch resistant and at the same time be able to emit more light.
According to Corning, more light means better photo quality. It makes sense, because this is also what makes a larger camera sensor better picture quality, as more light can be captured than a smaller sensor.
But according to Corning, reflections from glass make light unrecorded. This is what happens to glass protectors that have an anti-reflective coating in them, which affects the quality of the photos taken.
They claim that by using these DX and DX + layers, the camera lens can capture 98% of the available light. Larger than the protective layer of a regular lens that only 95% of the light can pass through.
This advantage is of course still there with the advantage of scratch resistance like regular Gorilla Glass.
It is still unknown which mobile phone will be used by the Gorilla Glass DX and DX +cameras. But perhaps Samsung is the first company to use it, as they will soon launch their latest phone via Galaxy Unpacked on August 11th.
