Instagram introduced a new feature that can automatically translate text in Stories. This feature will be available worldwide and can translate to more than 90 languages.
With this feature, Instagram can detect if there is a foreign language text in the Story that is different from the language used in the app. Users can view translations of text according to their native language by tapping the 'View Translation' option at the top left of the screen, as quoted from The Verge, Thursday (22/7/2021).
For users or influencers whose audiences are spread across many countries, this feature will certainly be very helpful to expand their reach. If you find a Story in a foreign language, users also don’t have to bother opening Google Translate and tap a button to understand the content.
This feature was first reported by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi in May 2021, and is only launched now. Instagram previously had a feature that could translate captions, comments and user bios, but this is the first time the feature has been brought to Stories.
While this feature can translate text automatically, Instagram says that this feature still can’t translate audio. Therefore users may still find it difficult to understand what influential people are discussing in a foreign language.
But at least the presence of this feature could make Instagram more inclusive. And it is not impossible that they will introduce an audio translator feature in the near future.
In May, Instagram also introduced an automatic caption feature for Stories and Reels. Unfortunately, this automatic caption feature can only be used for English audio, and is not yet available for other languages.
