In recent years, the iPhone market in the United States has been eroded by Android. But now the number of activations of the two smartphone platforms has been balanced.
According to the latest data from Consumer Research Intelligence Partner (CIRP), smartphone users in the US are now split evenly between Android and iOS. They also mentioned that in the last year, the changes that have occurred from the activation of new mobile phones have been minimal, which means the market has stabilized.
But for Apple, this is a ‘win’, as their market in recent years has been eroded by Android. That is in the case of activation of a new device.
For example, in 2017, where two out of three cell phone buyers in the U.S. chose to buy an Android phone, and until mid -2019 this hasn’t changed.
Both Android and iOS users, according to CIRP founder Mike Levin, have been loyal for the past five years. Where 90-93% of Android users return to using Android, and 86-93% of iOS users return to using iOS.
However, the level of loyalty of iPhone users has recently started to increase slightly. This may be because there are people who do not trust security and privacy on Android. Similarly, support issues for older operating system updates on the iPhone, as well as the presence of affordable iPhones like the iPhone SE series.
The CIPR report is based on a survey conducted on U.S. citizens who activated new and used cell phones for four months through June. So there may be a margin of error or difference when compared to a larger population.
However, in a similar survey conducted by SellCell on the used mobile phone market, their findings are more or less similar to CIPR. That is, the level of loyalty of Android users has decreased, albeit slightly, among users in Uncle Sam’s land.
Of course there are other factors that can influence this, for example the resale value of iPhone is better than Android. Or the assumption that iOS is superior to Android.
