COVID-19 Cases in Japan Up 87% the First Week of the Olympics, How?

In the first week of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, COVID-19 cases in Japan increased 87%. The Tokyo 2020 side admits that this has nothing to do with it as they are always tested to make sure the crew and participants are in good condition.
On the 10th day of the Games, including the opening ceremony, Japan announced five additional deaths and 10,177 cases, compared to four deaths and 5,020 infections a week earlier. In one week the number of Japanese cases increased 87% to 937,293, which is the 33rd position in the world.

Meanwhile, Tokyo 2020 boss Toshiro Muto said at a press conference that the COVID-19 surge in Japan was unrelated to the Olympics which included 11,000 athletes representing 206 countries. The positive level was only 0.02% or 72 of about 350,000 tests that included participants and other stakeholders.

Of the COVID-19 cases in Japan, ‘only’ 259 cases were linked to the Olympics. Safety protocols were also promoted, including requiring athletes to wear masks when not competing. Moreover, the COVID-19 case in Japan has indeed been going crazy since early July.

In the test, Japan only earned 146,550 per million. However, Tokyo 2020 ensures that all Olympic athletes and staff are tested periodically.

The COVID-19 infection rate per million in Japan is 7,344. Compared to other countries, the United States has 107,311 cases per million, the UK 85,783 per million, and Indonesia 12,436 per million.

Globally, the United States currently ranks highest in the issue of total deaths due to COVID-19 with a total of 613,224 deaths and 35,002,148 cases, according to tracking by Johns Hopkins. Brazil is in 2nd place in the number of deaths with 556,834 and India in third place with 424,351. As for the number of cases, India is in 2nd place with 61,655,824, above Brazil which has a total of 19,917,855 cases.

But Japan lost in the vaccination problem. Japan has relatively low vaccination and testing rates. Japan’s vaccination rate is also only 39.3% of the population, according to Our World in Data.

The United States has given at least one dose to 57.4% of the total population. Brazil has also vaccinated 49.8% of its citizens. India’s first dose rate was 26.6%. China did not report the figure but the percentage of doses they have is sufficient for 58.5% of the population of 1.5 billion people. This was launched by UPI, Tuesday (3/8/2021).
