The artificial intelligence (AI) industry took another hit this week after Sony halted almost all of its SD and CFexpress memory card business yesterday. On its website, Sony said production was temporarily halted due to a worldwide shortage of SSD memory driven by massive demand from AI data centers.
Sony intends to resume production but has not given a final date yet. Among the products discontinued are CFexpress Type A, CFexpress Type B, SD Touch, and SD cards. This makes Sony the first photography company to stop producing memory so far.
Last year, Micron discontinued Crucial products to focus on data center production. Earlier this year, Western Digital announced that its manufacturing capacity was fully booked while Samsung may also stop production of SATA SSD storage due to higher demand from the AI industry.
