The World AI Cooperation Organization (WAICO) was established yesterday in Shanghai. WAICO is an intergovernmental body for global artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation and governance with 29 member countries. The organization will uphold the purposes of the UN Charter, commit to broad consultation and mutual contributions for mutual benefit and adhere to a people-centered approach.
It aims to promote international cooperation and global governance on AI, ensure AI is beneficial, safe and fair, thus promoting its healthy and orderly development for the benefit of all humanity.
Malaysia is among the original 29 member countries along with South Africa, Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Cuba, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Kenya, Congo, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lesotho, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Senegal, Serbia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, and Zambia.
Based on member countries, WAICO is an organization comprised of a bloc of developing countries in the Global South that have good relations with China, which proposed the establishment of the organization. WAICO's headquarters will be located in Shanghai.
