PUBG Renamed to PUBG: Battlegrounds

PUBG aka PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has quietly changed its name. The game is now called PUBG: Battlegrounds. Apparently publisher Krafton made this change last July.
This naming may seem strange to PUBG fans, because if translated, the name of the game becomes Battlegrounds PlayerUnknown: Battlegrounds or if you want to shorten it to PUBGBG. But there must be a reason behind this decision.

“Krafton is actively developing the PUBG brand through new experiences set in the universe,” Krafton said as quoted by PC Gamers.

"Rebranding PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is our first step in realizing this vision. Additional titles in the franchise will carry the PUBG name, as you can see with our upcoming game, PUBG: New State," he continued.

The next game series, PUBG: New State, is a mobile game with a futuristic atmosphere. Callisto Protocol, a horror game from the creators of Dead Space, is also linked to the franchise. However, the name of the game is not burdened with the prefix PUBG.

For years, gamers referred to this game simply as PUBG, and with more games in the franchise. It seems reasonable enough to distinguish between them a little.

The rebranding also according to Krafton will avoid confusion, especially for people who don’t know what PlayerUnknown really is. The name refers to Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, the figure who contributed to making this battle royale game popular by making the ARMA 2 mode and later leading the expansion of PUBG. He left PUBG in 2019.
