Apple Allows Certain Apps to Pay Externally

The South Korean government recently drafted a new bill that would force Apple and Google to allow third-party payment services in app stores.

A few days earlier, Apple announced that it would allow developers to communicate with their users via email that they could use alternative payment methods.

Now thanks to the Japan Fair Trade Commission, Apple has agreed to allow Reader category app developers to add a link to their website.

Apple assesses this category of Reader applications developers do not offer digital goods and services in the application for purchase.

This change will cover all reader apps worldwide, but Apple will update its guidelines and review process first before they are implemented.

"We have great respect for the Japan Fair Trade Commission and appreciate the work we have done together, which will help reader app developers make it easier for users to set up and manage their apps and services, while protecting their privacy and safeguarding their trust." said Phil Schiller, the executive in charge of overseeing the App Store.

Doing so would allow developers to avoid Apple's 30% commission rate, which is an issue that more and more developers are arguing about.

This change goes into effect in 2022 and while it is part of an agreement with Japan to close the investigation, Apple notes that the change will be implemented globally as well.
