Canva has recently become a very popular app for design due to its full range of features and ease of use. No wonder the founder became rich and it seems, he wanted to do more with his money.
Canva was founded by Melanie Perkins, a beautiful woman from Australia who has Filipino blood. She developed Canva with the help of her husband Cliff Olbrecht, in 2013 with the mission of making the design platform available to all. Be it a business card design, presentation or logo.
Perkins was still a teenager when the idea of a design platform crossed his mind, when he and Cliff were students in Perth. He felt that design programs from Microsoft or Adobe were difficult to use. "People have to spend an entire semester learning where the buttons are and it just feels ridiculous," Perkins said.
"I think in the future, it's going to be online and collaborative, and a lot simpler than those heavy tools," he added.
Over time, Canva has been a huge success and is currently valued at around USD 40 billion. The valuation is even higher than Telstra, the Australian telecommunications giant.
Thanks to Canva, Perkins and her husband according to the Australian Financial Review's (AFR) Young Rich List have a net worth of USD 3.4 billion. Feeling blessed, Perkins and her husband committed to donating 30% of that amount to charity, primarily through the Canva Foundation.
"If everything is just about building wealth, then that is the least inspiring thing. It's weird when people call us billionaires because we never feel like the money is ours, purely a deposit," concluded Perkins.
