WhatsApp has just released a chat transfer feature from iOS to Android. As the name implies, this feature allows users to transfer chat history from iPhone to Android without fear of losing data.
WhatsApp says this feature can be used to transfer data such as account information, profile photos, individual chats, group chats, chat history, media (photos, videos, audio messages), and settings. Currently users cannot move call history or display names.
This chat transfer feature is only available for Samsung phones running Android 10 or higher. WhatsApp says this feature will be rolled out to more Android phones in the near future.
WhatsApp also released a way to move WhatsApp data from iPhone to Android because the process is quite technical. But before moving chat from iPhone to Android, there are a few things to consider, namely:
- New Samsung devices must have Samsung Smart Switch app version 3.7.22.1 or higher.
- Old iPhone devices must be running WhatsApp iOS app version 2.21.160.17 or higher.
- New Samsung devices must be running WhatsApp Android app version 2.21.16.20 or higher.
- USB-C to Lightning cable (can be connected to an equivalent adapter).
- The new device must have the same phone number as the old device.
- The new Android device must be new from the factory or returned to factory settings (factory reset).
After all the conditions above are ready, when moving WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android. Here are the steps, as quoted from the WhatsApp blog, Friday (3/9/2021).
- Turn on your Samsung phone and connect it with your iPhone using a USB-C to Lightning cable when prompted.
- Open the Samsung Smart Switch app and follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted, scan the QR code displayed on the Samsung phone screen using the iPhone camera.
- Tap Start on iPhone and wait for the transfer process to complete.
- Open the WhatsApp application on the new Samsung phone and login using the same phone number as the one used on the old phone.
- Tap Import when prompted and wait for the process to complete.
- Complete the activation process of the new device and you can see the chats that have been moved on the new Samsung phone. The WhatsApp account on the old iPhone will automatically log out and you will be able to use WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
After the chat data has been successfully transferred to the new phone, the data on the old phone will still be saved unless you delete it manually or delete the WhatsApp application on the old phone.
WhatsApp guarantees that they will not be able to view the transferred user data because the data is transferred locally using a cable, not sent to WhatsApp servers. In addition, the data transferred also does not go to cloud storage due to the migration process.
It should be noted that voice or video call history cannot be transferred from iPhone to Android. So is the history of peer-to-peer payments.
