iPhone 13 Durability Test While Slammed, How Tough?

Like most flagship phones, the iPhone 13 immediately underwent a series of endurance tests to see its durability. One of them is through the 'drop test' aka dropping the iPhone 13 from a certain height to see the toughness of the body.

The drop test this time was conducted by Allstate Protection Plans to compare the toughness of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12. Allstate Protection Plans previously called the iPhone 12 the toughest phone they've ever tested after last year's drop test.

Allstate Protection Plans test the toughness of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro by dropping them multiple times with the screen facing the ground (face-down) and the back facing the ground (back-down) from a height of 1.8 meters.

When the iPhone 13 is dropped face-down without a case, it can still survive minor damage. But when dropped a second time, the top and bottom corners look cracked.

The iPhone 13 Pro immediately cracked at the bottom during the first drop test. Allstate Protection Plans say these results are the same as they found when testing the durability of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

During the back-down test, the iPhone 13 survived without any damage, only a few cracks in the camera and corners of the phone. While the back of the iPhone 13 Pro immediately suffered severe cracks and one of the cameras broke.

Allstate Protection Plans also conducted a drop test with iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro which are protected by a MagSafe case made of silicone and Apple leather to see how strongly these cases protect the iPhone inside.

With a silicone case, the iPhone 13 passed three back-down tests and suffered only minor scratches on the camera lens. While in the face-down test, the iPhone 13 immediately cracked in the second test.

With a leather case, the iPhone 13 Pro passed three back-down tests without major damage, but with just one face-down test the screen cracked immediately.

"In our first Apple case test with MagSafe, we found that silicone and leather cases could protect the back of the phone very well when the phone was dropped, but not so strongly when the phone was dropped with the screen facing the ground," the Allstate Protection Plan said in a statement. from MacRumors, Thursday (30/9/2021).

"Given the back panel repair that costs up to USD 549 for the iPhone 13 Pro, wearing a case is a must," he continued.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 themselves are made with the same design and protection. The screen is coated with Ceramic Shield, the back is coated with glass, and all four sides are wrapped in aluminum or stainless steel.

As with most drop tests, what will happen to an iPhone 13 when dropped in real life will vary depending on the height, the material on which it is dropped, the part of the phone that is impacted, and various other factors.
