Samsung Electronics is said to be in negotiations with Tesla to produce Tesla's autonomous car 'brains', which will be based on Samsung's 7nm process.
Since early 2021, Tesla and Samsung have actually discussed the chip design several times. They have even exchanged prototype chips that will be used for the brains of a Hardware 4-based autonomous car.
However both Tesla has not commented on these rumours, while Samsung declined to comment.
If Samsung manages to win over Tesla, they are expected to manufacture the chip using its 7nm manufacturing process. Currently, Samsung has also produced chips for Tesla's Hardware 3 computer.
Previously, Tesla boss Elon Musk said at the AI Day event that Tesla would introduce new hardware for the autonomous car computer system in the Cybertruck electric car, within the next year.
Samsung, in the semiconductor business, currently has a market share of 17.3%, still far behind TSMC whose market share reaches 52.9%.
Currently, the shortage of chips that has occurred since the Corona pandemic is still happening, and the impact is even worse. Losses in various sectors due to this shortage are estimated at USD 11 billion.
In fact, the scarcity of these chips is even worse than last July, where the waiting time for chip orders was six days shorter than today.
Currently, if there are companies that order chips, the waiting time until they receive their orders has reached 21 weeks. According to Susquehanna Financial Group, this waiting time is the longest since they started researching the chip business in 2017.
