South Korea seems to be showing a paradigm shift in their technology development sector. Reuters reported today that SK Hynix, the world's largest memory chip component manufacturer, has a market value of 2082.5 trillion won ($1.35 trillion), slightly higher than Samsung Electronics' market value of 2,081.3 trillion won ($1.31 trillion).
As mentioned, SK Hynix is the world's largest memory manufacturer, contributing a large percentage of memory usage, especially in the AI sector, where they are also the largest market holder for High Bandwidth Memory memory production in the first quarter of 2026 with 58 percent of the market according to the latest Counterpoint report.
Samsung Electronics is not far behind, and it should be noted that Samsung has more types of businesses than SK Hynix. Samsung Foundry, Samsung's subsidiary responsible for producing semiconductor chips, is also seen producing slightly different components than Samsung, such as DRAM memory chips for consumer devices, logic chips, and so on.
But for now, the throne of the most valuable company in South Korea has been taken over by SK Hynix, and they are expected to maintain that position as long as HBM memory chip components are still in high demand by the AI market.
