Chronology of WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Down Together

WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook fell together long enough to leave many people distraught before they were successfully restored. Disturbances hit various parts of the world, including Indonesia.

DetikINET's monitoring on the Downdetector site on Monday (4/10/2021) night western Indonesia time, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook were experiencing problems. Thousands of complaint reports from users have been received by the site.

The problem with connecting to the server is what WhatsApp users complain about the most. In addition, they claimed they could not receive messages. While many Instagram users complain that they can't update their news feed. Even some others can not log-in.

The hashtags #WhatsApp and #InstagramDown also flooded Twitter, which is often used by netizens to complain if there are social media services experiencing problems.

Through a Twitter account, Facebook admits that some of its users have difficulty accessing the application and its products. They also tried to conduct an investigation to find the cause of the problem.

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience," wrote the Facebook account.

WhatsApp's Twitter account has also been twittering about problems that occur in its service. Like Facebook, they are investigating the root cause of the disturbances that occur to users around the world.

"We are aware that some people are having problems with WhatsApp at this time. We are working on getting things back to normal and will post an update here as soon as possible," said the WhatsApp account.

Recovery Service and the Roots

WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are finally starting to recover after more than 6 hours of downtime. Users have started to be able to send and receive messages, update feeds and post Stories.

"To the large community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we're sorry. We've been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report that they're back online now. Thank you for accompanying us." call Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook also apologized. "Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger are back online now. Sorry for the interruption today, I know how much you depend on our service to stay connected with the people you care about," Zuck wrote on Facebook.

Facebook's Vice President of Engineering and Infrastructure, Santosh Janardhan, in his blog, said that the failure of the three services was caused by a configuration change in the backbone router. But Janardhan did not provide a more detailed explanation.

"Our engineering team has learned that configuration changes to the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers are causing problems that disrupt these communications," Janardhan said on his blog.

"This disruption to network traffic has a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, thereby stopping our services."

Janardhan also said the disruption was not caused by hackers or attempts to retrieve user data. It also ensures that no user data is leaked during this disruption.
