PS5 Finally Drops Nintendo Switch

Sales of the Sony PlayStation 5 in the United States finally overtook sales of the Nintendo Switch in September.

According to the NPD Group, this is the first time the Nintendo Switch has outnumbered sales in the US in nearly three years. The console made by Nintendo has indeed become the best-selling console for 33 consecutive months in the US, even more in demand than the PS5 and Xbox Series X when it was first released.

"PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform during September both in terms of units and dollars (nominal sales)," explained Mat Piscatella from NPD.

The PS5 has actually become the best-selling console in terms of nominal sales in dollars during 2021, but before September, the number of units sold was still lower than the Nintendo Switch. Keep in mind, NPD only counts sales in the US, excluding other major markets such as Europe and Asia.

It's just that it hasn't been revealed whether Sony can overtake Nintendo because they can secure the supply of the PS5 or because supply is hampered and demand is slowing ahead of the launch of the OLED Switch.

So Nintendo can actually overtake Sony again if demand for the Switch increases, or they can secure a sufficient supply of Switch OLEDs.

But actually PS5 also has an impressive record, because it is the fastest selling PlayStation in history, with sales reaching 10 million units to date. Nintendo, on the other hand, has sold 89 million Switch units since its launch in 2017.

Only the Xbox Series X and S are currently unknown, because Microsoft has not disclosed them. However, Daniel Ahmad's analysis from Niko Partners said that 6.6 million units of the Xbox Series X and S as of June 30 have been sold.
