Review of Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, Elegant and Fast

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is a gaming laptop with a 16-inch screen with a combination of AMD processors and Nvidia GPUs.

Like most other Lenovo gaming laptops, the design is subdued. Unlike most gaming laptops that have a trendy design. What is the performance of this laptop like? Let's look at the following reviews.

Design

Lenovo maintains a calm and elegant design on the Legion 5 Pro. Even more so with the Storm Gray color in the unit we tested. The body is quite large, because the screen size is indeed large, which is 16 inches.

However, because the screen bezel is relatively thin, the body is not much different from a 15-inch laptop. Even its weight (for a laptop in its class) is fairly light, which is 2.45kg. Even so, with such a heavy weight, the Legion 5 Pro is a bit torturous if you carry it around a lot.

Oh yes, Lenovo also maintains the placement of ports that are divided into three, namely on the left and right and on the back. The port on the back is devoted to ports with large plugs, such as chargers and HDMI. Although there is also a USB-C port for output to DisplayPort 1.4.

Screen

Another interesting thing about the Legion 5 Pro is the screen ratio, which is 16:10, not 16:9 like most laptops. The unit we received uses an IPS panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. The maximum refresh rate is 165Hz and the maximum brightness level is 500nits.

In our opinion, this screen is very fun, not only for playing games. Even for watching and processing photos because of its good color accuracy.

Even because the ratio is 16:10, this laptop is also comfortable to use for work (typing and browsing). Due to its higher vertical resolution, more documents and web pages can be displayed.

Keyboard

This screen also supports a complete set of standards, including Dolby Vision, HDR 400, Free-Sync and G-Sync. The sRGB color coverage is 100% and Lenovo has calibrated the screen using the X-Rite standard from Pantone.

Regarding the keyboard, the Legion 5 Pro uses the Lenovo TrueStrike keyboard. The shape of the keys is slightly similar to the keyboard in the Thinkpad series, very comfortable to type or play games. It is also equipped with RGB backlit, where the color and brightness level can be adjusted according to taste.

This keyboard is equipped with a numpad key on the right, which makes the 'normal' keyboard position displaced to the left, including the touchpad position that is parallel to the space bar.

The matter of keyboard comfort really depends on people's tastes. But for me, this left-leaning keyboard makes the Legion 5 Pro only comfortable for playing games. Meanwhile, for other purposes such as typing, this keyboard position is not very comfortable.

Fast performance, fan too...

Admittedly, the combination of Ryzen 7 5800H and RTX 3070 used in the test unit produces very fast performance. All of the games we tested were able to run at a sufficient frame rate, all set to maximum resolution and (almost always) right-aligned.

Meanwhile, for competitive games like CS:GO, this 165Hz refresh rate can be maximized to reach a frame rate of 165fps (and even more) easily with the highest settings.

But like all fast gaming laptops, of course the fan noise is also noisy. Because the heat generated by the combination of the CPU and GPU used must still be removed from the laptop.

Fortunately, the temperature on the surface of the keyboard is relatively well maintained, especially above the WASD keys which are the main keys in most games. The highest heat is at the top of the laptop, because this area is a place for heat dissipation.

Likewise with its stable performance due to Legion Coldfront 3.0's good heat dissipation. Oh yes, there is also an option to reduce this noise by selecting Quiet mode. Although indeed the temperature of the processor and GPU will certainly be higher if this mode is enabled.

Our opinion

The Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3070, and 2K 165Hz display are the perfect combination for a gaming laptop. The CPU and GPU capabilities are proportional to the screen resolution and maximum refresh rate.

So all the capabilities of the components will be used optimally. Oh yes, this Legion 5 Pro has 2 M.2 slots, namely an M.2 2280 slot up to 1TB and an M.2 2242 up to 512GB, so users can add an SSD without having to remove the default SSD.

Its calm design makes it less conspicuous when used in public places. But this of course depends on the taste of the user.

The screen and the shape of the keyboard actually make the Legion 5 Pro also suitable for work purposes. Unfortunately the position of the trackpad that leans to the left makes it a bit strange when used to type.
