This is the greatness of the M1 Pro and M1 Max, Apple's most powerful chipset

Apple announced the M1 Pro and M1 Max at an event titled Unleashed. This is the most capable chipset ever made by the Cupertino tech giant, because it has CPU and GPU performance that is many times faster than the M1 announced last year.

Apple claims up to 70% faster CPU performance. The GPU in the M1 Pro2 is faster than the M1, while the M1 Max is up to 4x faster than the M1.

Both chipsets are still based on 5nm process technology, but come with a system-on-a-chip (SoC) architecture featuring integrated memory, better performance per watt and power efficiency, along with increased bandwidth and memory capacity.

The M1 Pro offers memory bandwidth of up to 200GB/s, with integrated memory support of up to 32GB. The M1 Max offers up to 400GB/s of memory bandwidth - twice that of the M1 Pro and nearly 6x that of the M1 - and support for up to 64GB of integrated memory. It also features an enhanced media engine with a dedicated ProRes accelerator for professional video processing.

"The M1 has transformed our most popular systems with outstanding performance, specialized technology, and industry-leading power efficiency. No one has ever applied a system-on-a-chip design to a pro system to this day with the M1 Pro and M1 Max, " said Johny Srouji, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies.

"With massive improvements in CPU and GPU performance, up to six times the memory bandwidth, a new media engine with ProRes accelerators, and other advanced technologies, the M1 Pro and M1 Max take Apple's silicon further, and are unlike anything else in notebook pro. "

M1 Pro Specifications

33.7 billion transistors, more than 2x the number in M1.

10-core CPU, including eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, up to 70% faster than M1

Up to 16-core GPU that is up to 2x faster than the M1

Compared to the powerful discrete GPU for notebook PCs, M1 Pro delivers better performance while using up to 70% less power

The M1 Pro can be configured with up to 32GB of fast integrated memory, with a memory bandwidth of up to 200GB/s

Dedicated acceleration for the ProRes professional video codec, enabling playback of multiple high-quality 4K and 8K ProRes video streams while using very little power.

M1 Max Specifications

10-core CPU as powerful as the M1 Pro

32-core GPU for up to 4x faster graphics performance than the M1.

57 billion transistors - 70% more than M1 Pro and 3.5x more than M1

The GPU delivers performance comparable to high-end GPUs in compact pro laptop PCs while consuming up to 40% less power, and similar performance to high-end GPUs in the largest PC laptops when using up to 100 watts less power

Up to 13x faster rendering of complex timelines in Final Cut Pro compared to the previous generation 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Doubles the memory interface compared to the M1 Pro by up to 400GB/s, or nearly 6x the memory bandwidth of the M1.

The M1 Max can be configured with up to 64GB of fast integrated memory.

Video encoding is 2x faster than the M1 Pro, featuring two ProRes accelerators.

With the M1 Max, the new MacBook Pro can transcode ProRes video on the Compressor up to 10x faster than the previous generation 16-inch MacBook Pro.

M1 Pro and M1 Max support more external displays

Both the M1 Pro and M1 Max are loaded with advanced special technologies:

16-core Neural Engine for accelerated on-device machine learning and better camera performance.

New display engine that supports multiple external monitors.

The additional integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller provides even more I/O bandwidth.

Apple's custom image signal processor, in conjunction with the Neural Engine, uses computational video to improve image quality for sharper videos and more natural-looking skin tones on the built-in camera.

Best-in-class security, including Apple's latest Secure Enclave, hardware-verified secure boot, and runtime anti-exploit technology.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max are part of Apple's two-year transition to Silicon. Both of these chipsets can be tasted on the latest MacBook Pro which you can read about the specifications and greatness.
