Disney+ Growth Slows, Netflix Still Most Popular

The Disney+ video streaming service still saw growth during Q4 2021, but growth has slowed considerably compared to the previous quarter.

During the three-month period from July to October, Disney+ recorded an additional 2.1 million subscribers. However, their growth fell considerably compared to the previous quarter, where they recorded 12.6 million new subscribers.

When combined with Hotstar subscribers, Disney+ currently has 118.1 million subscribers, with a global average revenue per subscriber of USD 4.12, down from USD 4.62 in the same quarter a year earlier.

In September, Disney CEO Bob Chapek had warned investors that new subscriber growth would slow to a low single-digit millions in Q4, and his predictions came true.

Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts expect Disney+ to gain 8.1 million new subscribers in Q1 2022, with a total of 126.2 million subscribers. Disney took about 16 months to reach 100 million subscribers.

"While commemorating the second anniversary of Disney+, we are very pleased with the success of our streaming business, with a total of 179 million subscribers from our DTC (direct to consumer) portfolio, including ESPN+ and Hulu," said Chapek.

Meanwhile, Netflix still dominates video streaming services, with global subscribers reaching 214 million, of which 74 million are from the United States and Canada.

Average revenue per customer in the US and Canada in Q3 last was USD 14.68, up 14 cents over the previous quarter. Last quarter, Netflix also recorded 4.4 million new subscribers, up from growth in the previous quarter of only one million subscribers.
