Google Cancels Making Foldable Pixel Screens, Because of Samsung?

Google was rumored to be developing a phone with a folding screen, which was originally said to be released with the Pixel 6.

But now Google is reportedly canceling the development of a folding screen phone, which was originally said to be released in Q4 2021. The reason for the cancellation of the development is reportedly Samsung. Why?

According to Display Supply Chain consultant Ross Young, Google has canceled orders for components needed for the Pixel Fold (the name for the foldable Pixel), and they are not expected to release a foldable phone until at least the first half of 2022.

Whereas previously Gogole had released Android 12L which was intended and optimized for tablet devices and folding screen phones. With Android 12L being first showcased in March, it is assumed that Google will release a Pixel with a foldable screen.

Likewise with a series of codes in the Google Camera application which indicates that Google will release the Pixel Fold in 2022.

However, Google seems to find it difficult to compete with Samsung, which has released folding screen phones since 2019, and is arguably the best folding screen phone maker at the moment.

The reason is that when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Pixel Fold seems to be losing out on features, because it doesn't have some of the Z Fold 3's superior features such as active stylus support or a front camera hidden under the screen.

Even though based on the rumors circulating, the Pixel Fold's specs are fairly decent. Like a 7.57-inch screen that has a refresh rate of 120Hz. Then the brain is Google Tensor, just like in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro lineup. The camera specifications may be a little behind, but still quality.

Another factor that is assumed to make Google cancel development of the Pixel Fold is cost. Unlike Samsung, which produces many of the components used in the Z Fold 3, Google has to order these components from other companies. As a result, Google might not be able to profit from the Pixel Fold if they actually produce the folding screen phone.

But there are also those who think this cancellation is a good thing. That is waiting until the folding screen phone market is really mature, rather than releasing a cellphone for a market that is not too clear. Steps like this are also what Apple usually uses when there is new technology on the market.
