Pentagon Alerts to Russia's Threat of Satellite Destroyer Weapons

Russia destroys their old satellite from the Soviet Union, to test its weapon in the form of a satellite destroyer missile. The move drew widespread criticism in the United States, including from the Pentagon.

The anti-satellite weapon is called the DA-ASAT missile. The destruction of the satellite caused thousands of debris in space and was considered dangerous in the long term.

"The debris generated by this dangerous and irresponsible test will now threaten satellites and other space objects vital to the economies, security and research of all nations for decades to come," said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The US will consult with its partners to respond to Russia's actions. While the Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, stated that the most worrying are the debris from the satellite destruction caused by Russian missile fire.

"The immediate concern is the debris, which is now in space and could pose a threat, including to the International Space Station," he said.

The Pentagon is also keeping an eye on what the Russians are testing the weapons for and what kind of capabilities they are trying to achieve.

"We are closely watching the capabilities that Russia seems to want to develop that could pose a threat not only to our national security but also to other countries on missions in space," he added.

The missile fire has so far produced more than 1,500 detectable debris and hundreds of thousands of other small pieces. NASA boss Bill Nelson also expressed his frustration.

"I am outraged at this irresponsible act. With its long space history, it was unthinkable that Russia would endanger not only American astronauts and their partners on the ISS, but their own cosmonauts," he said.
