Facebook as the parent company has changed its name to Meta. Mark Zuckerberg believes the 'metaverse world' will be the next evolution in how we use the internet. Will this vision work?
Zuckerberg's vision of the metaverse is a virtual place where everyone can interact using virtual reality and augmented reality technology, but still feels like meeting in person.
"In the future, you'll be able to instantly teleport as a hologram to your office without having to travel, to a concert with friends or your parents' living room," Zuckerberg wrote.
Zuck can be sure that the metaverse is the next breakthrough after smartphones. "Facebook wants to be a host (in this world), not just a tenant," wrote The Times technology analyst Benedict Evans.
Whether it will be popular is still difficult to predict. "Is it really this that we have to do it?" asked Azeem Azhar, a tech geek.
He added that at this time, there is still no powerful application in augmented reality or virtual reality technology. Then looking at other technologies, it is difficult to replace the existing ones, where people are already comfortable with them.
"It's been about 20 years since texting became popular and people are still texting today, even though there are already richer ways for us to communicate with each other," Azeem says.
Facebook certainly has a strong capital as the world's largest social network. Not to mention they have a virtual reality company, Oculus. We'll see if Zuckerberg's vision of a metaverse world will come true according to his dreams.
