Efforts to Save the Earth at COP26, Here's What You Should Know

The COP26 climate change conference (Conference of the Parties) begins on Sunday (31/10) in Glasgow, Scotland. The results will determine whether we move toward a clean carbon economy by 2050 or add to the destruction of the Earth.

Quoted from Science Alert, Monday (11/1/2021) this climate conference brings together delegates from around the world to discuss their plans to reduce emissions and limit climate change.

The question, however, is whether countries will expand their commitment to the Paris Agreement, an international plan laid down in 2015 that aims to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius by 2100.

Although 197 parties at the 2015 conference agreed to the Paris Agreement, countries' commitments to reduce emissions are not enough to stabilize the climate below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The aim of COP26, according to organizers, is to get countries to agree on a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. All world leaders are expected to work together to support adaptation to climate change that has occurred.

COP26 also seeks to mobilize developed countries to provide climate finance of USD 100 billion per year to help developing countries finance their climate-related goals. The end goal is to complete the Paris Rulebook, a step-by-step guide to reaching the Paris Agreement.

Summarized, the expected outcomes of COP26 are as follows:

Funding from developed countries to combat and mitigate climate change

Compensation from developed countries for the impact that will befall them

Funding from a group of developed countries to help them implement a more environmentally friendly economy.

To note, the COP meeting is held every year (this year is the 26th). This year's conference is of particular concern so that each country agrees to update every five years on their efforts to reduce emissions.
