Another Look at Samsung Innovations Perfecting Foldable Screen Phones

Folding screen phones are becoming the new standard in the flagship phone segment. Samsung is listed as a well-known technology brand that is quite aggressively spawning innovations on folding screen phones through the Galaxy Fold series.

The first time Samsung released a folding screen phone, the Galaxy Fold was on February 20, 2019. This phone carries a screen that spans a maximum of 7.6 inches called Infinity Flex when opened, and a 4.6-inch screen as a cover.

Samsung makes a screen formulation that is flexible but still sturdy. The Super AMOLED screen of the Galaxy Fold uses a layer of polymide material that is claimed to be flexible so that it can follow the flexibility of the screen.

The two screens on the Samsung Galaxy Fold are integrated with each other. Users can move content from the cover screen to the main screen or vice versa seamlessly thanks to the S App Continuity feature.

In the first generation of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has embedded the inner screen feature which is also equipped with the multi active windows feature. Currently, it already exists on other Samsung phones, but with a larger screen, users can open three applications on the Galaxy Fold at the same time.

Improvements to the Folding Screen on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2

After the Galaxy Fold, which at that time was priced at Rp. 30 million, received a good response from customers, Samsung launched the next folding screen phone innovation through the Galaxy Z Fold2 in August 2020. This second generation comes with a series of updates and more complete features.

The Galaxy Z Fold2 has a wider cover screen, which is 6.2 inches, but has identical dimensions to the Galaxy Fold. The difference in screen size is due to the adoption of the Infinity-O Display screen without a frame around the screen.

Thanks to the removal of the camera notch and its replacement with a punch hole, as well as 27% thinner bezels, the inner screen of the Galaxy Z Fold2 is also 1.12 times wider than the Galaxy Fold. This second generation folding screen phone from Samsung has a 7.6-inch screen landscape, uses a Dynamic Amoled panel that has an adaptive refresh rate capability of 11-120 Hz.

Another difference between the Galaxy Z Fold2 and its predecessors is the use of the Hideaway Hinge hinge combined with the CAM mechanism, so users can adjust the fold from 75 to 115 degrees. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also features a sweeping technology that is the first to clean the gap between the screen and the hinge of dust particles and dirt.

The audio quality is also boosted. Samsung puts high-dynamic dual speakers that deliver quality and immersive stereo sound.

Folding Screen Technology Innovation in Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

Only 1 year after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold2, its younger brother, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, stepped out in mid-2021. The third generation of the Galaxy Fold series is enriched with technology and innovative features from Samsung.

In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G has excellent toughness. The body of the device uses Armor Aluminum material, the strongest aluminum ever used for a cellphone. In addition, the screen cover is coated with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for the strongest protection against scratches and unexpected drops.

But toughness does not stop there. The most fragile part of a folding screen phone is on the hinges and the folded part of the screen. That's why Samsung redesigned the body and hinge to get the gap as small as possible.

Meanwhile, the folded part of the screen uses a stretchable PET layer. The more optimal quality of the main screen panel makes the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G screen 80% more durable than its predecessor.

The revolutionary Hideaway Hinge was first introduced in this new series. Enables devices to stay strong in one piece to support the innovative user experience of Flex Mode.

Samsung also provides a special rubber coating on electronic components to protect them from water that may enter. The hinges of the device are also given an anti-rust coating to protect them from potential corrosion. With its water resistance capability, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G passed the immersion test in fresh water with a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes so that it received an IPX8 certificate.

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G features a 7.6-inch Infinity Flex Display main screen with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels. The screen carries a 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel that offers rich, sharp and detailed colors. In addition, the refresh rate is now 120Hz from the previous 60Hz.

The 'Infinity' label on the screen carried by the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, is not just a label. The screen is indeed capable of displaying visuals that seem limitless, due to the elimination of the punch hole that previously adorned its predecessor series. Instead, the South Korean technology giant made an under-screen camera technology innovation, which was the first time it was presented in the world.

This technology gives users a wider view to watch, play games, and make video calls, but can also use facial recognition more seamlessly.

The presence of Flex Mode, which allows users to open the screen in a 90 degree fold or fully open, makes users free to work, for example making conference calls while writing notes. In addition, Flex Mode also allows users to adjust the screen position when streaming videos or movies, in order to get a comfortable position.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G performance is supported by Snapdragon 888 Octa-core (1x2.84 GHz Kryo 680 & 3x2.42 GHz Kryo 680 & 4x1.80 GHz Kryo 680) and combined with Adreno 660 GPU. Chipset performance is supported by 12GB LPDDR5 RAM capacity and UFS 3.1 ROM with 128GB and 256GB capacity options. The combination delivers high processing speed, and is reliable for running multiple applications at the same time.

To support multitasking, the Multi Active Window feature is available, allowing users to open three applications at once on the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G screen. The position of the application can be changed according to the user's wishes.

In order to make it easier for users to switch applications, Samsung presents a taskbar like on a computer device. In addition, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is the world's first foldable smartphone that supports S Pen stylus compatibility. Users can choose to use the S Pen specifically for the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G or the S Pen Pro which can be used on other Samsung devices.
