OPPO Showcases Advanced Air Glass & NPU Technology Innovation at INNO DAY 2021


OPPO is holding INNO DAY 2021 as an annual exhibition that showcases its latest technological innovations. Two advanced technologies released by OPPO this year are Air Glass and NPU (Neural Processing Unit).

OPPO Air Glass is a monocle-shaped aR (assisted Reality) device equipped with Spark Micro Projector technology, the latest Micro LED, as well as a special diffraction optical waveguide display. Meanwhile, NPU is the first imaging technology developed by OPPO, where RAW processing can be carried out in real-time so users can record videos using the 4K AI Night Video feature and display live previews with stunning quality.


Since the launch of OPPO INNO DAY in 2019, this technology exhibition has been considered an important event in the company's history. OPPO Air Glass


OPPO Vice President and OPPO Research Institute Head, Levin Liu said that his party had developed Extended Reality (XR) technology for a long time. Through OPPO Air Glass, it has succeeded in creating smart glass products that are now within the reach of consumers.


"Coming with a futuristic design, OPPO Air Glass will change the way we see and consume information. With OPPO Air Glass technology, users can activate various interesting features quickly and easily using hand gestures, head movements, voice, or touching the virtual screen that appears on the device," said Liu.

Liu further explained that the OPPO Air Glass design was inspired by the curved shape of a monocle. Implementing OPPO's design philosophy, Air Glass has a smooth curve shape to produce a light and minimalist look.


The OPPO Air Glass body is inspired by light, slim and curved strands of feathers. The touchbar on the device body has a shape that resembles an elegant feather rod. Meanwhile, the lens on the device is inspired by the beautiful cicadas wings and is different from conventional monocle lenses which are usually oval or round in shape.


The lens is embedded into a lightweight and slim frame. Inside this frame is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 Platform and all the other key tech components.


"The OPPO Air Glass frame itself is manufactured using CNC technique so that it looks elegant and precise. With a unique and attractive design, the OPPO Air Glass weighs about 30 g and is one of the lightest aR devices on the market today. This makes it a stylish technology accessory that can be worn as an everyday fashion."


OPPO also independently developed Spark Micro Projector technology, advanced Micro LED, and special waveguide technology, and integrated all three in OPPO Air Glass to produce a clearer and sharper aR display so that the device can be operated indoors or outdoors. The Spark Micro Projector is the lightest image imaging technology on the market with a size of 0.5cc or the size of a coffee bean.


This projector has a CNC metal enclosure with a glass lens module for heat dissipation and stability. This projector is powered by the latest Micro LED which has a brightness level of up to 3 million nits. In addition, special optical diffraction waveguide technology enables two display modes, namely 16-level grayscale or 256-level grayscale.


"This device can also produce an average brightness of up to 1400 nits to produce clear and sharp visual displays in different lighting conditions," said Levin Liu.


OPPO Air Glass can be used with the Smart Glass application found on OPPO Watch 2 and all OPPO phones with the ColorOS 11 operating system or later versions. OPPO's Senior Director Jiang Bo explained that with more than a decade of experience in imaging technology development, his party has succeeded in creating some of the best camera module, lens and algorithm innovations on the market.


"The state-of-the-art NPU imaging technology that we created is the biggest leap in the development of mobile imaging systems and brings an extraordinary experience to OPPO smartphone users," said Jiang.

"The NPU is manufactured on a 6nm process, combining an advanced ISP and multi-tier memory architecture to deliver exceptional performance devices with unmatched efficiency levels," he added.


With ultra speed and high efficiency, continued Jiang, NPUs can perform 18 trillion operations per second (TOPS). According to him, this power is more than enough to run OPPO's AI algorithm. With an astonishing power efficiency of 11.6 TOPS per watt, this NPU is able to deliver the best performance without draining battery power.


"The NPU is also equipped with an innovative tera-bps memory subsystem that allows it to operate by maximizing the NPU's computing power without being limited by memory.
