The popularity of TikTok seems to be getting unstoppable. This short video platform just overtook Google and became the world's most popular website domain in 2021.
TikTok's new achievement was announced by internet security company Cloudflare in its Year in Review 2021 which summarizes the ranking of the largest internet traffic throughout the year. Although the TikTok application has been downloaded by billions of users, it seems that many still like to access this platform via the web.
TikTok first made it to the list of the top 10 domains last year. At that time TikTok was ranked seventh, behind Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix, and Amazon.
For 2021, apart from TikTok's soaring to the top spot and Google's drop to second place, the composition of this list hasn't changed much. Only Amazon rose one place to number six, displacing Netflix.
According to Cloudflare data, TikTok first reached the top of the global traffic list on February 17, 2021, followed by several days in March and June. After August 10, TikTok feels at home perched on the top position.
"There are days when Google is #1, but October and November are mostly TikTok days, including Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26)," Cloudflare said in a blog post. /12/2021).
This is quite surprising considering that Google has many services such as Maps, Translate, Photos, News, and others that have billions of users. While TikTok is a newcomer who first entered Cloudflare's list last year.
With this achievement, TikTok, an application made by a Chinese company, ByteDance, became the first non-American site to be included in the list of the 10 most popular domains in the world.
