Chip Crisis, Chinese Smartphone Shipments Rise

China's smartphone market is experiencing an increase based on the latest figures coming from government data. The latest official data shows that China shipped around 342.8 million smartphones to the domestic market in 2021, which represents a 15.9% increase from the previous year.

The figure represents a strong performance in light of the massive decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However the current figure is falling below its pre-pandemic performance, but the outlook remains bright.

In 2020, the total shipments of around 296 million smartphones, which is a decrease of 20.4% from the 2019 high of around 372 million units.

Reported by us from Gizmochina, Thursday (20/1/2022) this data was collected from a government-supported think-tank, the Chinese Academy of Information and Communication (CAICT).

The aggregate figures reveal the return of several Chinese brands that have seen a massive decline due to the pandemic and other foreign factors. The global chip shortage that is still ongoing could also be a factor that might slow growth.

China's smartphone market is a very competitive market, with a large number of local brands taking up a share of the market, and Apple, the only foreign brand with a significant presence in China's domestic market. Apple continues to record strong performances in China's domestic markets including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

China's domestic smartphone market is rebounding, and the outlook is positive it will reach and exceed pre-pandemic performance by 2022.
