Google Makes Its Own AR Headset?

Google is reportedly developing an AR (augmented reality) headset called 'Project Iris' which is planned to be released in 2024.

According to a report from The Verge, an AR headset prototype is currently being tested at Google's facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The design is rumored to resemble a pair of ski goggles and doesn't appear to require a tethered connection.

The camera on this AR headset is also planned to be facing out and will have an internal battery built for charging. Then it will also provide additional videos for users when this device is used.

If this is true, this isn't Google's first attempt at making an AR headset. Google made a wave check last year when they launched Google Glass, but it didn't work out in the end.

But Google is also trying to try its luck in the VR space with its Google Cardboard and is getting a pretty good reception.

Apple was previously rumored to be launching their own AR headset set in late 2022. The Apple AR headset is expected to sport a Sony microLED display with a see-through mode for AR content and a blur mode for VR content. A total of 15 cameras will be used, providing a truly immersive experience for users.

The design will be lightweight with a weight of 200-300 grams thanks to the fleece-like fabric exterior. Users will still have to connect to a computer/laptop to turn on the AR headset while a more portable version will arrive in 2025
