Old Programmer Fired and Forced to Delete Data, Boss Regrets Later

A programmer was forced to resign from his position and was replaced by a new graduate (fresh graduate). He was also forced to delete important company-related data which he had stored very neatly and could help the company in dealing with customers. Apparently, the decision was regretted by the boss six months later.

The story is told by, Oldman 712, a man who got a job designing and writing software prototypes for high-value individual customers. Based on his story on Reddit, one day, he was forced out on the grounds that he was no longer needed. He also had to train the new boy who replaced him, for two weeks.

"Working for many years, I collected disk farms from past projects, which could be useful for customers ordering as we did last year with a change or two," he said, citing Bored Panda.

There are approximately 10 discs that he collects and is worth USD 1,000 per disc . But because of the sudden change in management, the management staff thought they could replace him with a fresh graduate who would have a lower salary (perhaps to save money, I don't know).

Another thing is, he was asked to delete all the company data that he owns and its backups. The man then offered the company a number of options: they could either buy the data from him or he would leave the data in case someone needed it one day. All his offers were flatly rejected.

"Six months later, I got a series of desperate phone calls. The software freshman couldn't build a new prototype. The old customer asked for an old prototype to be updated, and the new grad didn't know how to do it. The Executive VP called to ask what could bring me back. to my old job," he said.

Too bad, this man had to refuse because he already had a new job. Even if he wanted to, he also couldn't do the work that was asked of him because he had already deleted the old data as requested by the company -- even though he had warned about the risks long ago.

"Hopefully whatever you're trying to save money on is hiring fresh graduates to replace experienced programmers," he said.
