Netflix has reportedly refused to broadcast Russian state TV channels even though it is a mandatory streaming service in Russia starting this week.
"Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our service," Netflix told CNN Business.
The law requiring media platforms to broadcast Russian state TV channels takes effect from March 1, 2022.
Netflix, which has a reach of more than 100,000 subscribers in Russia, should also distribute Russian news and entertainment TV channels for free.
The policy is overseen by Russia's state communications regulator, Roskomnadzor. One such channel is Channel One, which has close ties to the Kremlin, according to Politico.
This decision comes a week after Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine. The invasion has been condemned by many countries around the world and triggered a series of crippling economic sanctions targeting the Russian economy.
The Netflix service itself will continue to operate in Russia. Netflix did not say how they would circumvent the regulation and said they were monitoring the situation closely.
