The Biggest Camera Sensor for Cell Phones Coming Soon

Currently, one of the camera sensors used in 1/1.12-inch mobile phones is the Samsung GN2, which is used by the Mi 11 Ultra.

However, there is also a 1-inch sensor used in the Sony Xperia Pro-I, although not all parts of the lens are used. Previously there was also the DMC-CM1 from Panasonic which was released in 2014, which became the phone with the largest sensor of its time, 1 inch with a 20MP resolution.

Well, according to Digital Chat Station, Sony will release a 1-inch sensor for cellphones in the near future, namely the IMX989. This sensor will be a competitor to the sensor used in the Xperia Pro-I, but with a higher resolution.

The 1-inch sensor on the Xperia Pro-I has only 12MP resolution, while the IMX989 resolution is likely to be 50MP, as quoted by us from Phone Arena, Thursday (21/4/2022).

IMX989 is reportedly going to be released in 2022, but there is no definite time information, and previously Sony was just rumored to be releasing the IMX866 which is the successor to the IMX766 - Sony's current flagship camera sensor.

The sensor from the 800 series will also be used in the ranks of flagship phones like its predecessors used in OnePlus and Oppo, which uses these two sensors in the Find X5 Pro.

The IMX866 is expected to be bigger than the IMX766, but with the same 50MP resolution. The sensor dimensions make the pixel size also larger, so it can capture more light.

Then according to Digital Chat Station, the biggest difference between IMX866 and IMX766 is in the red-green-blue-white (RGBW) pixel matrix formation used. Not the red, green, and blue in the IMX766.

The additional white pixels used can reportedly improve light collection and better color accuracy, of course if you use the right photography computational algorithms.

But the most interesting feature of the IMX866 is likely to be called 'dual-frame technology', which is capable of supporting two image ratios at once. The first ratio is 16:11 which is used for video recording, which uses a 1/1.49" wide sensor.

Then for photos, the ratio used will return to 4:3, but it has not been revealed the size of the sensor used in this ratio. For information, the IMX766 has a sensor size of 1/1.56".
